If you need a rented GPU for AI video, image generation, fine tuning or running a model, Runpod and Vast.ai are two of the names you'll see most. Both rent GPUs by the hour and bill by the second. But they work in different ways, and that changes what you pay and how much you have to think about it.
Quick note on the name: the company now writes it Runpod. You'll still see "RunPod" all over the internet, which is the older styling. Same company.
Let me be clear about my own experience first. I use Runpod. It's the GPU cloud I render my AI videos on, including my 100 day videos and Nero clips. I haven't used Vast.ai myself. Everything about Vast.ai below comes from its official pricing page and documentation, which I checked on October 30, 2026.
The quick answer
- Pick Runpod if you want a fixed price list, a choice between data center GPUs (Secure Cloud) and cheaper Community Cloud GPUs, no data transfer fees, and Serverless options if you later want to turn a workflow into an API.
- Pick Vast.ai if your main goal is the lowest hourly price and you're happy to compare hosts yourself, check reliability scores, and handle extras like bandwidth charges that vary by host.
How each one works
Runpod runs its own platform with two cloud types. Its docs describe Secure Cloud as running in T3/T4 data centers with high redundancy, and Community Cloud as vetted peer to peer providers with more variable reliability and lower prices. Runpod's docs also say it is no longer accepting new Community Cloud hosts, though existing Community Cloud resources remain available. Prices are set by Runpod and listed on its pricing page.
Vast.ai is a marketplace. Independent hosts and data centers list their GPUs, and the hosts set the prices. Its docs say price, reliability and location vary by host, and you pick the offer you want. Vast.ai lists 40+ data centers and 68+ GPU types.
GPU price comparison (per hour)
These are on demand prices from each official page on October 30, 2026.
- Runpod: Secure Cloud price, with the Community Cloud price in brackets. Runpod's pricing page says it was updated October 8, 2026.
- Vast.ai: the lowest live offer ("from") and the median price shown on Vast.ai's pricing page when I checked. These change constantly.
| GPU | Runpod Secure (Community) | Vast.ai from | Vast.ai median |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 3090 | $0.50 ($0.22) | $0.09 | $0.19 |
| RTX 4090 | $0.89 ($0.34) | $0.14 | $0.48 |
| RTX 5090 | $1.19 ($0.69) | $0.39 | $0.71 |
| RTX A5000 | $0.27 ($0.16) | $0.19 | $0.23 |
| RTX A6000 | $0.59 ($0.33) | $0.37 | $0.47 |
| L4 | $0.59 ($0.44) | $0.10 | $0.50 |
| A40 | $0.59 ($0.35) | $0.27 | $0.53 |
| L40S | $1.09 ($0.79) | $0.43 | $0.80 |
| A100 PCIe | $1.79 ($1.19) | $0.40 | $0.77 |
| A100 SXM | $1.79 ($1.39) | $0.40 | $0.82 |
| H100 SXM | $3.99 ($2.69) | $1.73 | $2.40 |
| H100 NVL | $3.19 ($2.59) | $2.40 | $2.61 |
| H200 | $5.29 ($3.59) | $2.76 | $4.64 |
| B200 | $7.99 ($5.98) | $7.50 | $10.00 |
What the table says: on raw hourly price, Vast.ai's cheapest offers are lower than Runpod for most GPUs, and its median is often close to or below Runpod's Community Cloud price. Runpod's Secure Cloud costs more, and you're paying for data center hosting and a fixed price list. For the B200, the Vast.ai median was above Runpod's price on the day I checked.
A cheap "from" price is a single offer. It might be on a host with lower reliability, limited storage, slow internet or a short maximum rental time, so compare the full offer, not just the headline number.
Storage and data transfer
This is where the cheapest hourly price can stop being the cheapest bill.
Runpod (from its Pods pricing docs):
- No fees for data ingress or egress.
- Container disk: $0.10/GB/month while running, not charged when stopped (it's temporary and erased when the Pod stops).
- Volume disk: $0.10/GB/month while running, $0.20/GB/month when stopped.
- Network volume: $0.07/GB/month under 1TB, $0.05/GB/month over 1TB, portable between Pods.
- Compute and disk storage are billed by the second.
Vast.ai (from its pricing and billing docs):
- Storage is charged for as long as the instance exists, even when it's stopped, and is typically higher when stopped.
- Bandwidth (upload and download) is charged per byte, and the rate varies by host.
- Billing is per second, so 10 minutes of use is billed as 10 minutes.
If you move big model files or lots of rendered video in and out, the bandwidth difference is worth checking on the exact Vast.ai offer you pick.
Ways to pay less
Vast.ai has three instance types, according to its docs:
- On demand: fixed price set by the host, guaranteed for the rental period.
- Interruptible: a bidding system, often 50%+ cheaper than on demand, but your instance can be paused if you're outbid or someone rents it on demand. Good for batch jobs that save their progress.
- Reserved: prepay for 1, 3 or 6 months for up to 50% off on demand.
Runpod: the simplest saving is choosing Community Cloud over Secure Cloud where it's available. Runpod's docs say its old savings plans are deprecated and can no longer be bought. Runpod also offers custom pricing for large and enterprise workloads through sales.
Credits, balances and refunds
Both platforms run on prepaid credit, so read these rules before you load money.
Runpod (from its docs):
- You need at least one hour's worth of credit for your chosen setup to start an on demand Pod.
- When your balance hits $0, Pods stop. Pods with a network volume keep their data. Pods without one are terminated, and that data can't be recovered.
- Default spend limit of $80 per hour across all resources, which support can raise.
- Runpod says it isn't designed for long term cloud storage, so back up important files.
Vast.ai (from its docs):
- Credits are prepaid by card (through Stripe) or crypto.
- At a zero balance, instances stop, and without a card on file they're scheduled for deletion.
- No refunds once credits are spent. Unspent card credits are usually refundable. Crypto credits are not.
Beyond renting a single GPU
Runpod also offers Serverless, where you pay per second only while a worker is running, for example $0.75/hour for a 24GB GPU (L4, A5000 or 3090 class) and $1.34/hour for a 4090 PRO on its pricing page. It also lists Public Endpoints for ready made models, including AI video models, and multi GPU Clusters.
Vast.ai also lists serverless and cluster options on its site. I've kept this comparison focused on renting GPUs by the hour, which is what most people compare these two for.
Who should pick Runpod
- You want fixed, published prices and a choice of data center or community GPUs.
- You move a lot of data and want no ingress or egress fees.
- You might later turn a workflow into an API with Serverless.
- You'd rather not compare dozens of host offers every time you rent.
Who should pick Vast.ai
- Lowest price matters most, and you're comfortable comparing host reliability, location and bandwidth costs.
- You run batch jobs that can be interrupted and save progress, so interruptible instances make sense.
- You want to prepay for months with a reserved instance for a bigger discount.

Reminder: that's my referral link. If you sign up through it and spend, I get Runpod credits, at no extra cost to you.
How Runpod's referral program works, from its docs on October 30, 2026: to count, a new user has to sign up with Google sign in, be new to Runpod, and load at least $10. After that $10 load, Runpod gives bonus credits to both people. Outside Europe it's a random amount between $5 and $500, and Runpod says most people get $5, with about 96% getting $10 or less. In Europe it's a fixed $5. That bonus comes from Runpod's program, not from me.
If you'd rather try Vast.ai, its prices are on the official page: vast.ai/pricing. That's a normal link, not an affiliate link.
FAQ
Is Vast.ai cheaper than Runpod?
On hourly GPU price, usually yes. On October 30, 2026, Vast.ai's lowest RTX 4090 offer was $0.14/hour with a median of $0.48, while Runpod listed $0.34 on Community Cloud and $0.89 on Secure Cloud. But Vast.ai charges bandwidth per byte at rates that vary by host, and Runpod has no ingress or egress fees, so compare the total for your job.
Is Runpod or Vast.ai better for AI video?
I render my AI videos on Runpod, so that's the one I can speak to. I haven't used Vast.ai. If your renders are long and you move large files, look at storage and bandwidth costs as well as the hourly GPU price.
Do Runpod and Vast.ai bill by the second?
Yes. Runpod bills Pods by the second for compute and disk storage. Vast.ai's docs say billing is per second too.
What happens if I run out of credit?
On Runpod, Pods stop at a $0 balance, and Pods without a network volume are terminated with their data lost. On Vast.ai, instances stop at a zero balance and, without a card on file, are scheduled for deletion. On both, keep a buffer and back up your files.
Is it RunPod or Runpod?
Same company. Runpod's docs say "Runpod" is the current styling and "RunPod" was the styling before June 2025.
